Biography

He received his B.A. from Ankara University, his M.A. from the University of Texas, and his Ph.D. from the University of Freiburg. He teaches courses on the Persianate World, World History, South Asia, and Modern Middle Eastern history. He has been a researcher at Boğaziçi, Basel, Bilkent, EHESS, and Tehran universities. Currently, with the support of the British Library’s Endangered Archives Programme, he is leading a project in collaboration with the Zheen Center in Sulaymaniya on the preservation, cataloging, and digitization of documents in Iraq from the late Ottoman and the Mandate periods. He has published articles and book reviews on Kurdish emirates, Ottoman Iraq, the Ottoman imagination of Iran, Ottoman Studies in the Arab world, biographical studies, and Global Microhistory in journals such as Middle Eastern Studies, Journal of World History, Ab Imperio, Kurdish Studies, International Journal of Conflict and Violence, and Kebikeç. His book, Contributions to Zagrology: C.J. Edmonds and V.F. Minorsky Correspondence (1928-1965), was published in 2024. He has written encyclopedia entries for Oxford Bibliographies Online, Encyclopaedia of Islam 3rd Edition (EI3), and The Kurds: An Encyclopedia. He is the editor-in-chief of The Encyclopaedia of the Kurds, published by Brill in the Netherlands. He is currently an associate member of the Centre d’Études Turques, Ottomanes, Balkaniques et Centrasiatiques (CETOBaC) in Paris and the book review editor for the Journal of Ottoman and Turkish Studies Association.
